GDPR stand for the General Data Protection Regulation which comes into force on 25 May 2018. This new regulation relates to the protection of all the sensitive data; company, personal or intellectual property a company has on hand. According to the home page for the GDPR it, “was designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, to protect and empower all EU citizens data privacy and to reshape the way organizations across the region approach data privacy.” The regulation applies to any company which handles EU citizen personal data, regardless of whether a company is in or outside the EU. The Data Protection Act is not the same as the GDPR and compliance is slightly different. The new regulation is more detailed in how data is to be processed and saved.
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is the UK’s independent authority to uphold information rights in the interest of the public. They recommend some form of encryption is a base layer of data security. The ICO will be releasing clear guidelines for procedures to comply with the GDPR.
